Phantom TOLLBOOTH Characters
Milo is a boy who has nothing to do, but throughout the story he learns how use his time with the help of all of the characters in the book. At the end of the book he says that there are so many activities to do right there in his room.
The Watchdog is a dog with a watch on his body. The Watchdog's name is Tock and his job is making sure no one wastes time. Tock met Milo in the Doldrums and helped him out by making him think. He follows Milo to dictionopolis where they start their quest to save Rhyme and Reason.
The Humbug is a annoying bug that is very full of himself. He gets into a big quarrel with the Spelling Bee and that fight brings down the whole word market. Then The Humbug accidently blamed it on Milo and Officer Shrift came and obviously said GUILTY.
The King's cabinet is made up of The Duke of Definition, The Minister of Meaning, The Earl of Essence, The Count of Connotation, and The Undersecretary of Understanding. Everything they say are synonyms. They are also very literal.
King Azaz is the enjoyable ruler of Dictionopolis. He sent Milo on a journey to save Rhyme and Reason because everybody leaves before King Azaz finishes talking. He said that The Humbug volunteered to do the quest with Milo and Tock.
The Mathemagician is very good at math and owns a mine full of numbers where small people mine for numbers. His helper is the Dodecahedron, a many sided figure, leads the journeyers to the mine. At first The Mathemagician didn't let Tock, Milo, and The Humbug resume their quest because King Azaz sent them on the quest, but then he let them go because Milo corrected him by saying "You and King Azaz agreed to ... not agreeing."
Apparently for the Whether Man it is more important of knowing if there is going to whether than what the weather will be. The Whether Man also repeats every word he says at least three times. He greets Milo and says that he is the Whether Man.
Officer Shrift's favorite hobby to do is put people in jail, but he doesn't really care if they get out. He likes to say that everybody is guilty. He is very short and fat and is the judge, jury, and executioner of Dictionopolis.
Chroma controls all of the colors of the world. He is a conductor and he conducts a silent band that controls the colors. He said to Milo to wake him up, but instead of doing that Milo conducted the orchestra himself. When Chroma woke up he praised Milo and said he might be able to conduct the orchestra one day.
The adventurers meet the Dodecahedron in front of the Mathemagician's mine. The Dodecahedron help the The Humbug, Tock, and Milo find their way to the Mathemagician's mine by flipping the sign that says how far from the mine to the other side. (it uses 1 face at a time)
The Sound Keeper keeps all the sound in the Valley of Sound which is now The Silent Valley. When a sound is made it goes into a envelope in a gigantic cabinet in her castle. She gave sound to the Valley of Sound but she got so mad because they all didn't take time to listen to the beautiful sounds of nature.
Dr. Dischord is a doctor that has a lot of potions. The Soundkeeper let him to try to cure the Valley of Sound so they can listen to the beautiful sounds of nature, but Dr. Dischord cured of them of everything but that so the Sound Keeper banned him and the DYNNE.
The Awful DYNNE is Dr. Dischord's "sidekick". The DYNNE collects all of the terrible terrible sounds in the world. The DYNNE is a big cloud of blue smoke. It forms a body part from his smoke when he uses that body part.
The Lethargarians are transparent, lazy creatures who meet Milo in the Doldrums and catch him there. Then Tock comes to the rescue and tells Milo to think. Thier daily routine is set up to get nothing done. Now because they don't do anything they lost their color.
The Spelling Bee can spell "anything" A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G apparently. It flies off after the quarrel and makes Milo and Tock take the blame and spend 6,000,000 years in jail. That is when they meet Faintly Macabre. The Spelling Bee isn't much different from the Humbug.
The Demons of Ignorance are bad news. They went after Milo, Tock, and The Humbug when the friends were going to the castle in the air. But there was a problem, The Senses Taker held them back to record their info and the Demons kept on coming. The Demons destroyed the stairs back down so Tock floated down slowly.
Rhyme and Reason are the rhyme and the reason of Digitopolis and Dictionopolis. But they got banished to the castle in the air because they said both numbers and words are equally important. The Mathemagicain did not agree on anything that had to do with words and Azaz didn't agree with anything that had to do with numbers. (They agreed on banishing Rhyme and Reason.)
Alec Bings is an unusual fellow who grows from top to bottom instead of bottom to top. He is also wise he said a bucket of water is a bucket of water to a human, an ocean to an ant, a drink to an elephant, and a home to a fish. Milo meets Alec in the Forest of Sight and Alec introduces himself.
Canby can be described with a lot of adjectives. He can be as small as possible, as big as possible, as tall as possible, as short as possible, as thin as possible, and as fat as possible. He stays at conclusions and tells the three journeyers that the only way back is to swim.
Faintly Macabre ,the which not the witch, met Milo in the dungeon when officer Shrift sentenced them for 6,000,000 years in jail. She convinced Tock and Milo to go on the quest to rescue Rhyme and Reason.
